R & R IT'S YOUR DATA

stmarc,

Secure support dialups have been installed on all new ADP DMS's for over 5 years now. These are special dialup devices that provides ADP diagnostic access to multiple ADP devices and technologies via a single phone line, thus it must be secured for ADP use only.

The support dialup on DMS's always have been intended for diagnostic use only. I know for a fact that ADP tells their clients that they need a separate modem and phone line if they need dialup access for a work@home user or 3rd-party venders, and this is stressed again during technology upgrades. I think most dealers understand the need for a separate dialup. However, some dealers decline a separate dialup because they don't think they have any venders that need it, or they don't want other venders accessing their DMS data without there knowledge.

If your company requires dialup access, you should not be asking your dealership contacts for the support dialup, but rather a "user dialup". If they only have a support dialup, you should explain to them in order to use your services, they will need to have an additional modem, phone line, and DMS serial connection installed. Your may also want to consider updating your data extraction technology. Many venders currently install their DMS data extraction program onto one of the dealers in-house PC's. Most of these modern programs can be either setup to automatically extract and send the data via a secure Internet connection, without intervention, or manually run so the dealer can review the data being extracted.
