Used Battery Storage

Postby Robert a Bamert jr » Wed Feb 06, 2002 11:20 am

Does anyone Know the Req. OSHA standard for storing Used batteries in the shop/parts dept. until they are sent to the recycler.
I have found a container that would work for the job, that we could use a forklift to move onto a transport truck, but before i spent alot of money on it, i need to find out if there is a standard i must follow to be safety minded. Is there CO. that sells something just for this? GM Dealer Equip. is not well versed in this matter. Thanks, BOB

I work for a safety compliance company. I dont sell battery storage bins but have alot of great ideas that are OSHA compliant and less expensive than what you are referring to. Call me at 800-723-3734 for more info.

We use one of those deep garden pools. It's made of rubber, it's tough, it's user friendly, and it's compliant.

I don't know who tried to sell you that bill of goods. A rubber garden tub is NOT compliant. Go To LAB SAFETY and buy a registered containment system. Visit us on line http://kpaonline.com because you also need to train your employees in hazardous materials and hazardous wastes as well as universal wastes. You can face some very deep-pocket liabilities if this is not done as soon as possible.

You see this comes into play due to warranty with GM you must hold the Batteries so many days after the claim is payed and these Batteries are replaced more so lately for leaking, so this is why it's important to me to do this right....Thanks to all for the Info provided so far

This is exactly why our dealer principle got rid of Kip Prawl. That is BOGGUS advice!!!!
Another company told me (for free advice), that as long as the tub would not get corroded by the acid and would hold it, I was OK. I call the EPA and our state environmen department who told me the same thing. I hear they like to scare dealers and make uneccesary regulations apply. Sometimes very wrong.

THANKS PartsMan, I had received the same free advice from Regulation Strategies.
A Company that I had used in the past for the training of shipping Haz. Mat.
Thanks to the very professional & informative woman I spoke with from they're Co. Also just for the record i did go to the web site of the Co. you talked about. I found the Reps email address for my area and have had no response.
