I am the shop foreman at a small to mid size dealership (18 total techs) and was wondering what other dealerships are doing as far as pay to completing the GM training CBTs on techs own time. I have a hard time getting some of the techs to do CBTs even during the work day (pay straight time while doing CBTs in the dealership) and would also like ideas on how to motavate them a little more.

I know of a few shops that have continued their incentives to techs based on completing certification levels. It's just a bonus for reaching certain levels, like master, etc. So, you might try something like "pass five courses and get a $100" or whatever makes sense for your shop. I also prefer to pay techs not at straight time, but based on their level of productivity (i.e., I'd pay at 125% of time spent if they are a 125% productive tech).

I do not pay my techs for doing the CBT or the IDL training. They are required to do them and keep them up. I do pay them for any off site training they do and it is the same rate as vacation and or holiday pay. This is an average of the last years preformance. I am able to do this because i am one shop in a group of 5 and the other 5 pays a flat $100.00 per day for the other times off (holiday / vacation) my techs know that they come out much better. So I do not have any problems

I was faced with the same issue, and think I have found an answer that works for us.

I pay my techs their current rate, times the etimated time on the CBT, or the actual time on an IDL course. The guys are not makeing money this way, but they aren't loseing as much! I spent alot of time and effort setting up a basic training plan for the guys and reward them at progressive steps. Still, it isn't alot, just a few bucks as a means of acknowleding the fact they put some time and effort into their career and my shop.

There really is not a fair way to do it, but this keeps them interested in progressing and trying to stay current in their training.

BTW, 12 techs, single line GM, Portland Or area.
