We have had ours for about 3 years. We use the cutter until the burr on the key edge will not easily come off with a small wire brush. It is not a bad idea to keep an extra one on hand in case you accidentally break one.

We were told the same thing. When the burrs get large or the cut looks rough, change the bit. That being said, some of the harder keys, look rough even with a fairly new bit. Our rep told us 4 - 500 keys seems to be the norm and that's where we were at when last changed the bit.
