Warranty for Accessory Wheel Locks

Warranty for Accessory Wheel Locks

Postby dropdeaddart » Sat Apr 25, 2015 12:31 am

Hi guys, my question today has been one that no one has been able to give me a solid answer for. But one that I have come up with myself. At the time of purchasing a new vehicle or lease the customer is presented that they have bough the accessory wheel locks, they are given the appropriate paper work (McGard). They are told not to lose either or it will not be warrantied, if either the lock or key is broken within the first year, how do you warranty it? Then there is the problem of getting the old locks off, which may required an air chisel or torch, and may damage the wheel itself or the studs. Then after the year, if anything breaks it is up too the customer as too what course of action they want to take. And who is responsible for the warranty, who does what actions, I would just like an experts opinion on this because of the last two weeks, I have had 3 bad experiences with customers/sales/service and my own manager/staff

I've never seen a key or lock break, but I assume these were installed at delivery? If dealer installed accessories are covered for the balance of the 3yr-36,000. Labor claim and replacement parts would be filed thru warranty. Any time above and beyond install allowance would have to be OLH.

Just sayin'... We remove any locks on Dealer trades, and do not install them on LPO's or Accessory wheel upgrades, unless the customer absolutely insists. Haven't had one yet, after we warn them of the PAIN it is to cut them off!

ps. Is there a Master Key set available thru McGard? I know there used to be 20 years ago, cause we have a box full of keys in my office.

Yes there is. I believe there are two Master Sets for GM, one for 12mm and one for 14mm.

In dealing with McGard for so long (we install locks on every unit, theft reasons), if a customer loses or breaks a key McGard will comp them one key. A little begging is needed each time. What would make a warrantable situation? I have never seen a lock fail because of a defect, it is usually been air-hammered on and the lock breaks trying to remove it, or a wheel lock gnome has taken it and it is no where to be found.

I'm pretty sure you can still get master sets, seems I have 5 or 6 half empty sets around here.
Being browbeat for over 35 years now... First 13 years GM, then 20 years Chrysler... NOW BACK TO GM!! :|

We just picked up a new master set. For GM they do have the 2 sets (12mm & 14mm) and they run around $150 each. Just have to get a hold of McGard directly.
