Ok so a salesman walks up to my counter this afternoon and says "I just ordered a set of chrome wheels for stock #"
"What are you gonna give us for the take offs? They have to be worth at least $400 a piece.
So #1 who has problems with sales dept ordering wheels through local ADI? Non LPO. (By passing parts dept)
#2 what are you doing for sales as far as crediting?

Re: Crediting sales dept for take off wheels, suggestions
About 3-4 years age, our service manager whos a big truck kinda guy comes to me and wants to lift a few trucks for our Sales dept. They're going to put on wheels with the lift and wants me to credit the wheels so he can keep the cost down. I made a few calls and found out that the best I could sell the take off set, wheels and tires, to a place like Wheel Collision or back to my ADI, was $350.-$400. FOR THE SET. Call them you'll see. That was in case I couldn't sell them. Plus it gave me a reference price to bargain with. He said he wanted $500. So eventually we made a deal for $500. It took a little bit for the word to get around. I placed an ad on Craigslist, but after a while I was selling every set they took off. But we don't mess around. I cost them at the $500./set of wheels and tires and sell them for $799. I now have people calling me and leaving their names for the next set that becomes available. We do ok because this is a pickup truck area. But what they appear to be worth if they were in a box and somebody needed them is different from take-offs, regardless of what the salesman expects. And I make some money when we bill the lift kit on the new truck, so I need to keep these take-offs moving. At first they did start to pile up until we got the hang of it. Must've had 20 at one point early on.

As long as they're buying the Accessory wheels from our parts dep't, and the take-offs have under 500 miles, I give $400 for 17", $500 for 18", $1000 for 20" generic and $1500 for 20" chrome. That's what our ADI will pay us for them if I cant sell them. Luckily with over 100 used cars/trucks through our shop every month and 200+ employees we don't usually send them back. I make up a part number for the take-offs (usually use the RO # from the transaction so I know where they came from) and put them in inventory. They can only be sold as a set of 4.
Our Sales dep't does not by-pass us except on rare LPO's that are occasionally force-fed from GM promotions. I work well with our Sales manager and help him out, so he helps me out. We have a pre-load program for trucks and Service/Parts benefit greatly, so co-operation is paramount. We've averaged $40k per month this year in accessory parts alone, not counting labor.

Only response I have is for #1 - He has no business whatsoever ordering parts himself. He's a car salesman, not a parts department employee.
Re: Crediting sales dept for take off wheels, suggestions
We don't give any credit for take offs, technically they belong to the customer. If he doesn't want them then we will gladly take them off his hands but he will not receive any credit for them.

#1 won't happen here. ADI rep knows better.
#2 if they don't qualify for credit through the ADI, not a thing, they belong to sales, and DO NOT BRING THEM TO PARTS.

I do a credit against the new ones on the repair order. Sell the aluminum wheels on craigslist, toss the steels in the scrap bin except for a handful for snowtire time, and sell the take off tires to the used car department and/or craigslist Credit $200 for steel wheels and tires, $350-500 for aluminum.

We here do credits towards the new car department, at $700 for 17'', $800 for 18'', & $1200 for 20".
I have a reseller that will buy them off of me were we make a couple hundred dollars per set. Or if our management is feeling really greedy.
They will try and sell them at retail, which is usually double.

One thing to keep in mind when dealing with take-off wheels and tires. Keep track of what they came off of and what you did with them. If a recall situation on a wheel or tire ever comes up (again!) you must be able to determine what you did with the wheel/tire that may be recalled.

We order the wheel kits from our ADI and sell them to the NCD at cost + Parts/Service takes care of the labor for new vehicles only. In return, we (Parts Dept) get the take-offs at No Charge. As for used vehicles or vehicles that have 2-300+ miles....we will allow a $400 credit torwards the purchase of Wheel Pkgs from GM. We also take car of all expenses involved with the Upgrade.
