Has anyone ever heard of charging employees for business cards? I don't remember paying for them when I started here a year ago. But my new counterman was told he had to pay for half the cost. When I asked why,I got the dreaded "Well thats the way way we've always done it".Other employees told me they have payed also. Thanks.......John

It is hard to believe that anyone would implement a policy like that. You want to encourage employees to give out their business cards. A lot of dealerships give all their employees (Including technicians) cards just to encourage them to let customers know who they talked to and make them feel part of the organizations. Business cards are cheap!!

Do they have any other strange policies?? Pay half the cost of paper towels or ?

I'm with Frank.

Every dealership employee that comes in contact with customers should be supplied with business cards. It's inexpensive and doesn't cost much.

Making employees pay for their own business cards will discourage their use. Short-sighted.

I have known of dealers that charge new and used salesmen for their cards. Not that this is correct but considering that many dealers came up through the front end they are applying what they sae and learned to the total dealership.

In my opinion dealers are of 3 types:
1. Former sales persons that came up through the ranks and put a deal together to buy a dealership. No problem with this, but some of them remain sales persons and do not become business persons.

2. Second Generation. Some of them can and do become professional business people and actually improve on what they were given. Unfortunately some of them never make that step and have not been through the school of had knocks so they merely maintain or on occassion increase the profitability of the dealership. I am trying hard to do that with what I was priviledged to begin with.

3. True Business People that happen to be in the automobile business. They apply sound business principals to the management of the business. Any of the first two can become a truly professional business person if they will avail themselves to the information and education that is available through many outlets - NADA, 20 groups, even educational institutions.

So much for my 2 cents. Happy Selling oops that should be happy managing.
