Union shop, physical inventory

Union shop, physical inventory

Postby onelap99 » Mon Jan 20, 2020 11:00 pm

Hey all. I perform physical inventories as a side hustle and have been asked to potentially do an inventory at a unionized dealership in the northeast. Being born and raised in Florida and with most of my business being in the southeast I don't have ANY experience with doing any kind of work at a union shop. When working out of town jobs like this, I would usually hire whatever qualified local parts people I could find.

Can any of you Parts Managers tell me what, if any, problems I might encounter with accepting this job?

Thanks

onelap,

We have a lot in common. I have never done a unionized parts department either but do know someone that has. If I remember correctly, there was no difference on our end as you are basically an outside contractor performing a service. If any of the counters belong to a union, I cannot see where it would have any impact as they would be working for you as sub-contractors. I could be wrong. Hopefully someone out here has experience in this. I would however like to hear about your experience.

I have managed Union shops in the past, there is no difference for you. Like MSI said, you are an outside contractor and no one will bother you.. The only time I could see a problem is if the shop is on strike, then it would be up to you and your folks whether you wanted to cross the line or not. Even though I have been management for over 20 years, I was a Dealership UAW member before that for 12 years and would not cross the line if there was a strike.. Otherwise, like I said there would be no issues...
