been awhile since I sent an engine back, but isn't there some kind of plackard you have to attach to the out side of the engine also along with the bol?

We have sent numerous engines back to WPC. Have never had to label as HazMat.

Just sent one back the other day. Had to put the 4x4 hazard flammable on the box. Also had to write the UN3528 number on the side of the crate. I wrote word for word from the BOL.

same here... i sent one back without the haz mat label once and got a reminder call...

can you use a label off of the interwebs, or does it have to be a glossy adhesive type?

i bought a roll from u line.. but i bet the one off web would work. i looked back thru some engine returns i had done before without them.. the haz mat guy told me they were all supposed to be haz mat..

i will never use all of them

I just sent an engine to the WPC a few weeks ago. I asked the WPC this exact question, this is what I received back from them:

"Mark the line on the hazmat BOL for UN3528. Follow bulletin 99-00-89-019X, section F, on returning engines and you will not need the hazmat labels."

amazing.. we are a small dealer, but i do alot of wpc returns. and only a handful with haz mat. any questions i always call also.. would be nice to get the same answer every time..

Engines that have been run or “hot tested” (i.e. had fuel in them) are considered hazardous material or dangerous goods. Therefore, if the Service Agent is contacted to return an engine, they should ensure the following preparation: Drain ALL FLUIDS Transfer all shipping plugs from the service engine to the returning engines, or cover open cavities with tape. Lower the engine into a plastic bag to ensure capture of any residual fluid leakage, place a drainage mat onto the base of the original service engine shipping container (box or pod), and place the bagged engine into the original service engine shipping container. Bolt and strap the engine to the supporting pallet and cover with the appropriate lid. Attach all corresponding documentation outlined above in the section titled preparing / packaging parts for shipping. ***** Note: Engines returned exactly in this manner, will NOT require any additional or special hazardous material packaging or labels (unless shipped by aircraft or shipped in Canada). Reference: US DOT 49 CFR 173.220 and Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations, Schedule 1 (UN3528) and Schedule 2 (special Condition 96) (Canada).
