Acceptable Use Policy

Acceptable Use Policy

Postby jdaniel » Thu Feb 21, 2002 5:14 pm

I need some input on crafting an "Acceptable Use Policy" for our dealerships' computers and networks. Because I have to fix things my gut instinct is to be extremely restrictive, but then I remember that these are just tools for profit, so I relax a bit. If anyone has advice to offer or experiences to share I would be most appreciative.

We have a written policy in our employee handbook that addresses all company material, including computers. It's a bit lengthy and specific to my dealership, however, your local dealer association's legal council should be able to help. We use Fisher&Phillips in CA and I think they have an office in Atlanta.

I just recently spent some time researching internet usage policy. I wrote a policy for our dealership that our legal firm looked at and approved. Of course they wanted to make lengthy additions as to intelectual property atc. They did say however that it was a good policy. I can send you a copy of the one I wrote to look at if you'd like.

Hey

Don't you guys read Dealers Edge?

The August 7 and August 14, 2000 issues covered this topic in detail including a sample computer use policy.

Click on archives in the left hand index and search on keywords "computer use policy."

You got me there, Mike. Since I just learned about Dealers Edge at NADA this year I didn't even think about the archives.
Thanks

I note it took the moderator three days to come up with the "don't you read Dealer's Edge" response.... isn't that worthy of a "don't you read dealersedge.com?"
