Ok, key codes have been a pain in the posterior for many years but it seems as of late the situation has gotten worse. How do you guys handle giving out keys in the following situation?
1.Its my moms car and she cant come in.
2. Its in my husbands name and he cant come in.
I have been burned in both situations, where the real owner (mom and the EX-husband) were upset that keys were given out.
We have required that the OWNER come in with picture ID, or that if it is not the owner, the child or spouse have something current (like proof of insurance) that ties them to the vehicle and picture ID.
My customers feel I am too strict, but I dont feel like ever having to pay to recode a customers car again. Should I lighten up?

No!! Don't lighten up! If you are using the Key Code Call Center, it was one of your requirements when they started this service to get POSITIVE ID from the customer when calling in for a Key Code. Too many times I have had the same problem you are describing, either a child 'borrowing' a parents car while they are out of town, or an EX stealing the other Ex's car....the other problem I have is Repo People, at one time I had several that called all the time for Keys....I finally put a stop to that, I charge everyone $17 to decode a VIN for codes, and then I charge for each key blank cut, INCLUDING to our own New & Used Vehicle Departments......still cheaper than a locksmith, but I GUARANTEE they actually LOOK for the keys now before requesting me to call in for a code!

Also, another thing we do is to make a copy of the person's Driver's License when they pick up the keys..., we file it with the key code Fax for 30 days in the "CYA" File.....

you should check with local and state law to
make sure you are in compliance.California
law requires any key cut to code request you
must retain proof of ownership and drivers
license copies on file in case a peace officer
comes in and request this info for inspection

I dont make keys unless proof of ownership
is presented to me period.Dont slack off or
you could find yourself in a nasty divorce
situatoin and then in court.We charge a hefty
fee for key code requests not to discourage
customers but to pay for the key machine lease.
