GM TRAINING

We would like to know how you pay your technicians for their schooling...
Do you pay for the IDL's and CD classes?
Do you pay their flat rate amount times the estimated class hours? And, do you pay tech's regular flag amount or reduce it?
With GM requiring so much training lately, we are looking for ideas.

I AM A CHRYSLER DEALER (5-STAR). TRAINING REQUIREMENTS FOR OUR TECHS HAD THEM IN SCHOOL ALOT THE LAST FEW YEARS. I PAY MY FLAT RATE TECHS FOR AN 8 HOUR DAY. MOST OF THE CLASSES ARE UNDER 8 HOURS. THERE ARE SOME TECHS THAT PRODUCE MORE THAN 8 HOURS A DAY, BUT IT HAS BEEN AGREED ON THAT 8 HOURS WAS FAIR. CD'S WE PAY 2 HOURS FOR A SINGLE CD, AND 4 HOURS FOR A DOUBLE

The standard in our part of the country (western states) is to pay the technician their average days pay if it's a full days class, or to pay their rate times the hours necessary for an IDL or CD (as stated on the CD case). It's very hard to get anyone to take the necessary time away from their productive time for the "mandatory" training that they may or may not truly need. I've also found that they will do the computer CD training at home if you pay them the alloted time for the training, thus keeping up their productive time and still getting some of the required training done.

Our guys are on commission also, & we pay them $25 per CBT's & Videos they PASS(which like rbrent stated in your post, they tend to take these at home) & we pay them their flat rate on IDL's or hands on. Now if they fail an IDL class, then they have to take the class until they pass it without pay. And this seems to work, we have no fussing or moaning from the techs, & I say majority of the the time they will pass.
