The whole solution to this issue is get the vehicles inspected in the driveway prior to going into the shop "A pre-inspection person" then you don't have to worry about the techs doing their jobs paid or unpaid.
You will sell a lot more of those fast maintennce items.

We don't have hourly lube techs. The way we handle cabin/air filter/wiper replacement is this:

The tech gets $1.00 for each cabin filter/air filter/wiper insert replaced. He keeps the UPC label from the packaging and turns it in at the end of the month. It adds up for the tech and makes a nice little extra bonus at the end of the month.

"NUMBER 65" thats nice but i have two questions.

1) where does the money get paid from ie parts or service acct.

2) what are you using for a parts pricing..are you using a patrix,GM list,?

My service manager did that $1 bit for a while, until I found out it was being charged back to me; well $1 is more than my profit on some of those items, so i put a stop to it. It's part of their job, paying people extra to do their job seems ludicris to me....

I have no problem giving a spiff on something I can sell at GM's list price and therefore make money on it. My problem is most of the maintence items that have been spoken about there is no real profit on, percentage MAYBE but not dollar wise.

If we want the techs to think outside the box, why won't the dealership think outside the box too. Why not pay the tech .1, or .05, and NOT charge the customer. Now this wouldn't work with LOF's, but with upsells from non-maintenance work there should be plenty of dollars left to pay that little amount.

And although customer satisfaction is the ultimate goal, flat rate makes most techs look at the hours they get paid on every job, and put that amount of effort into it. And, if customer satisfaction is the ultimate goal then flat rate wouldn't be used period.

I know I'll probably get hammered for this post, but customer satisfaction is not the ultimate goal, department/dealership profit is.

Jim, not so much bitterness, but disbelief. After spending 15 years in the aftermarket and thinking how messed up it is, 18 months in a dealership has me thinking this is even more messed up.

But, to try and stay on topic, our techs are paid to install air filters.

Keep smiling Jim, and count our blessings. At least our businesses aren't under 20 feet of water.

Jim, the money comes from the parts department. After all, we make no labor sales on it, so that's the only answer.

We sell our air/cabin filters/inserts at GM list.
