Group leader pay

I am certain this has been discussed before, but a search of the archives uncovered nothing, so here goes!

I am on the march to implement a lateral support system within my shop and wanted some input as to what some of you have paid group leaders. This will not be a team system, no sharing of hours. The responsibilities for these leaders amount to ovrseeing three other techs, some dispatching to them and a bit of customer contact on the drive. I am thinking instead of a flat hourly increase, something tied to the productivity of their group, a bonus of sorts for their group surpassing set standards.

What do you think? Just back into the figure as a percentage?

Group leader pay

I have always been a fan of "backing into" your numbers. We pay our lead tech a flat rate on all the hours his team turns, less his. We gave him .50, and that gave us the number we wanted, and room for a productivity increase. Seems to working out well. All the techs get close to the same hours (within 5 hours of each other last month, but I don't think we'll ever get that close again), and the lead tech has motivation to get the work done on the first visit (nothing for comebacks), and to help with problem cars.

Each of our group leaders is part of a 5 man team. Each man has has a "number" (certain number of f/r hours)to hit each day. If one guy hits his number the group leader get $3.00, if all five in the group hit their repsective number, the group leader gets $40.00, with intermediate payouts for 2-3-4 "hits". The group leader's number doesn;t count towards the daily goal unless at least two others on the team have made their own number.

So far, out three group leaders are making from a low of about $250 to a high of about $700 additional per month.

Cheers
