How do you administer PDI's into the shop. When they are placed in the pool, tech's try to bypass other work to get them. When they are of a lower dispatch, tech's rush through thier present job to get to them.

We rotate them through the techs so everyone gets one before you can get another one. It seems to be the fairest way.

Parts Guru's idea seems good.

We have a couple of dedicated PDI techs so its not usually a problem for us.

However, we do a large fleet business (900-1200 unit per year) so for 3-4 months each years we're deluged with PDIs. We throw that overflow work open to any regular line techs who are willing to stay late or work Saturdays :-)

Funny thing I've noticed over the years: all too often the techs who complain about "not getting enough hours" never wanna stay late to knock out a few easy PDIs. The techs who quietly go about their work without complaining always seem to be more than happy to put in a few extra hours to sop up the gravy. Weird, huh ?

We have one truly dedicated "New Car" tech. He performs all PDI's , new car state inspections, and accessory installations. In the slow times, he also reconditions our used cars (and even helps Prep cars when necessary)

gmoon,

Is the problem you're running into procedural, or based on the DMS you're using?

I have only two techs on flat rate, the others are hourly. One flat tech gets PDIs, while the other gets UVIs.

It would be hard to identify what would work at your place, simply because every shop's situation is different. You might try scheduling them into your customer schedule so that each tech can get some of them? Just a thought.
