One of the last 2 service advisors that we hired here made the career change from an engineering field. I would guess that he is a little older (maybe 40), he had recently quit his job and was idle. We put him on as an internship type program for about 4-6 weeks, he was not promised any pay (our Service Director did end up paying him $50 per day worked at the end of the internship, but that was decided later). This internship worked out quite well both ways, the dealership was able to try out and train someone without any automotive experience and he was able to see if this was something he really wanted and was able to do. He has sinced accepted a position as a Service Advisor and is really growing into it quite well, still raw but getting better each day.

Our other new advisor made a smaller career change. He came from a small independent shop that was own by his father and he accepted a short internship here also.

Just an idea that you could offer someone if you can afford to do it.
Also I would recommend looking at makes that have a higher maintenance to warranty repairs.
