Freon in Warranty repairs, GM

Postby Gerry Laughlin » Fri Jun 02, 2006 8:00 am

Hopefully somebody remembers this, but when r134a first came out it specifically said in print somewhere in the service policy and procedures that we should charge out the whole amount evacuated from a system in warranty repairs because technically we were recylcling it. I can no longer seem to find that in print, only a mention of preferably using recycled refrigerant in warranty repairs. Does anyone have any ideas if it is still out there somewhere?

ARTICLE 1.5
PAGE 16
General Motors Service Policies and Procedures
1/06
j. A/C Refrigerant
When air conditioning refrigerant replacement is required during a
warranty repair, only the actual amount of refrigerant used is to be
claimed, not the bulk or whole container quantity.

b. Recycled Refrigerant
Recycled air conditioning refrigerant will be reimbursed at the GMSPO dealer price
for new refrigerant plus the appropriate parts handling allowance. When air conditioning
refrigerant replacement is required during a warranty repair only the actual
amount of refrigerant used is to be claimed, not the bulk or whole container quantity.

from the 2006 p+p

add this

1.5.17 REIMBURSEMENT FOR MATERIALS AND/OR RECYCLED MATERIALS
(Excludes Saab)
GM encourages the use of recycled coolant and refrigerant when possible. Only coolant
and refrigerant recycled by GM-approved dealer equipment is permitted.
a. Recycled Coolant
Recycled coolant will be reimbursed at the GMSPO dealer price for new coolant plus
the appropriate parts handling allowance. When coolant replacement is required during
a warranty repair it is important to assure that only the actual amount of engine
coolant concentrate be charged to the repair order, not the total diluted volume.
For example, if two gallons of pre-diluted (50:50) recycled coolant are used to service
vehicle, dealer may request reimbursement for one gallon of Goodwrench coolant
concentrate at the dealer price plus the appropriate warranty parts handling allowance.
b. Recycled Refrigerant
Recycled air conditioning refrigerant will be reimbursed at the GMSPO dealer price
for new refrigerant plus the appropriate parts handling allowance. When air conditioning
refrigerant replacement is required during a warranty repair only the actual
amount of refrigerant used is to be claimed, not the bulk or whole container quantity.

note the same wording is in the 1996 p and p

PJ,
I have seen that, but there used to be a section in the p&p or a bulletin that actually stated using our recovery equipment was "recycling" freon thereby whatever we recovered from the system before replacing a component, then put back into the system was able to be charged out. So say we had a locked up compressor, we would evacuate 3 pounds, replace the compressor, then put the 3 lbs back in it, we should charge 3 lbs of freon on the warranty repair because technically we had "recycled" it. This whole scenario was spelled out in the old p&p our bulletin I am trying to find.

I know exactly what Gerry is talking about, and it actually goes back to the early 90's with the recycling machine. Basically dealers were told that if they bought the machine they could charge recycled refrig out as new on warranty. It was very specific that you were allowed to claim capacity.

That language has been neutered to the point that P&P lists now which is vague and misleading for both sides.

I read the language now to say - don't charge out the 30lb tank on a claim (the bulk amount) and the actual amount is the capacity put in. I know most reps don't agree.

Unfortunately, I don't have any P&P's or the original TSB that outlined the procedure - but if you find the original corporate P&P from like 94 or 95 it might be much more specific.

Rob,
Exactly, it appears as though it is now open to interpretation, and we all know who's favor that is going to go in.
