GM INSPECTIONS

Postby dadogg » Mon Nov 20, 2006 6:12 pm

I was wondering about the GM inspections that the GM dealers are required to perform when the vehicle in in for service, I have some questions about Warranty:

Warranty Repairs
1.do you perform the noticed repairs that same visit or do you have the customer come back?

2.are you adding on to the same repair order that you performed the inspection on ?

3.are you signing off and verifying the repairs?

the reason I ask is we are very aggressive and feel if we notice a problem we always give the customer the option to repair, needless to say we have been rising in our DA report. just wondering what everyoned opinion is.

thanks the dogg

I'll allow "upsold" warranty work only if A) it is safety related B) the problem is severe enough to reasonably expect a more serious and expensive problem to develop as a result, thus costing the manufacturer more money or C)it is likely to cause a breakdown or other serious customer inconvenience.

All such add-ons much be verified and signed-off, as we all know. How many are signed off and "verified" after the fact is probably something we needn't discuss here, as I am sure none of us allows that to happen.

We have 5 carlines and my warranty expense is "in line" for all of them, and no factory rep I have ever spoken with has a problem with the guidelines I've just mentioned.

Cheers

I'd do them with most of the caveats listed above, except it really doesn't matter to me if they are safety or not since GM's add-on policy doesn't make that distinction.

More to the point, are you being too agressive? Is that oil leak a real leak or just seepage? Is that strut really faulty or just weak from normal wear? Those are the kinds of decisions that can chew you up.

Side issue - technically your DA report should not be so negatively impacted that you would see a huge rise. Why would found repairs on an inspection be that more expensive than any other repair? It isn't like you are adding on engine and transmission replacements. Generally, and this comes from a decade of studying the DA report and the cause of high expense - add-ons are actually lower in cost than typical repairs. At least it is easy to check - on the total CPVS line what is your CASES % over and how does that relate to your CPVS overage. If your CASES isn't high, then the cause of your warranty expense is likely not the inspections/add-ons.

Ditto with Old Irish and robc.

Your DA report will show you where you are getting out of line. Use the Claims Processing manual to get more information for the DA report, Appendix C - Analysis Reports. This will help you find your overages.
