Moving from Parts to Service

I think this young man is taking his next step toward one day becoming a GREAT Service & Parts Director, just like several I have had the pleasure of working with over the years. True, most come from "the Service side", but some GREAT ones I know started in the Parts Departments. If you don't give it a solid try, and I mean a solid try 'cause this won't be easy, you'll regret it later. The worst that happens is you try and fail. But is you're good, you'll try and win! And the next steps in your career will just get better. You already know you can be a Parts Manager. Go for it!

silverbullerday:
Kudo's to you for even contemplating a move to the Service side of Fixed Operations! If a challenge with just rewards is what you are looking for and you embrace the hard work and longer hours you are likely to see, I am sure that you will look back and be thankful for the decision you are making. The good feelings obtained from assisting clients with their repair and maintenance needs along with the daily challenges of pleasing the Client, Tech's, Management and Dealer make for quick days & short nights, but the financial rewards are greater and potential for advancement is more prevalent.
One of the greatest rewards that I get, is being able to coach and mentor individuals such as yourself to achieve greatness in our chosen field.
Go for it and.....GOOD LUCK!

Silverbulletday :

I have been :

1984-1985 Parts delivery driver
1985-1988 Parts Advisor
1988-1992 Asst Parts Manager
1992-2002 Parts Manager
2003-2006 Service and Parts Director
Jumped around from used car sales ( BAD I KNOW ) to Parts advisor till 2008 and landed a Parts Manager job again at another dealership.
I will say this : Never stop learning ! When I was promoted to S&P director it came at a great time for me. I had the BEST crew in Parts and it just seemed to run itself . I was ready for a new challenge ( had always helped in service when personel were gone ). I for one do not regret it , I learned alot . However I could not see myself doing it for 30 years like alot of PM's do. Then you might get lucky like me and find a S&P Director looking fo a good PM and knows you can step in and help him when needed.I had a old customer that I just reunited with and he told me " Good people always land on their feet ". I wish you the best of luck !
