Dexos 5w20 Discontinued?

Dexos 5w20 Discontinued?

Postby coleracing77 » Tue Oct 22, 2013 5:48 pm

I am being told by my oil distributor 5w20 dexos is being replaced by 0w20 dexos. I hear rumor is that 0w20 will help to meet cafe standards in vehicles previously requiring 5w20dexos.

What have you been hearing if anything? Did i miss a bulliten ?

WHOA!!!! Thanks for the update. I have not heard a word! I was wondering where I was going to put another container as I have 0-20 in a 55 gal drum at the moment.

Just got this in my email this morinig it is TRUE!!!

I addressed this to as many folks as I could…THIS IS IMPORTANT!

Summary: ACDelco 5w20 is being phased out. ACDelco 0w20 will be the replacement product and can be used in all applications calling for the 5w20. Pricing for the 0w20 will be adjusted to the 5w20 level….Result: Higher performing product for the same price and less inventory to manage.

1) Encourage all distributors to continue to fill dealer orders for ACDelco dexos1 5w20 from their current inventories, understanding that we do not intend to manufacture any more.

2) Advise our distributors to cease ordering ACDelco dexos1 5w20. For those that have backorders with us today, either cancel the existing backorders, or give us the green light to fill the orders with ACDelco dexos1 0w20, which will serve as the replacement product going forward.

3) Feel free to advise dealers who have current backorders with our distributors for 5w20, or dealers who may place additional orders for 5w20, that the acceptable alternative for use in those vehicles that call for dexos1 5w20 is ACDelco dexos1 0w20.

4) Mobil 1 5w20, which is dexos1 approved, will remain on the GM program, but the ACDelco dexos1 5w20 will be phased out entirely, as the demand will be very minimal after this announcement.

5) Effective 10/16/13, the price of the ACDelco dexos1 0w20 on the GM program will be reduced to match that of the ACDelco dexos1 5w20 on the program (currently $0.15 per quart difference).

6) This is a very positive change for the dealers.......they are getting a superior product in terms of quality for the same price, and they no longer need to inventory both viscosities.

7) Per the Service Bulletin attached (bottom of Page 4 under the FAQs), dealers should be advised to cancel their backorders for 5w20, and order 0w20 for use in all 5w20 applications. This bulletin was released this summer, but many dealers may not have read it.

8) ACDelco dexos1 is widely available throughout our network.

I'm frustrated with having to stock all these "boutique" oils in the first place but just because GM won't produce dexos in 5w20 doesn't mean we won't need it anymore. I guess we'll have to go back to stocking the Exxon/Mobil Supreme 5000 5w20, like we did before the dexos came out. The only reason we stock and sell so much of it is for all the used Fords, Toyotas, Hondas etc. that we service prior to sale, certainly not for the (2) 2009 Vibe customers that still come to a dealer for oil changes! I don't think our Used Car Sales Manager is going to approve MobilOne in these vehicles either.

Once I see the announcement from GM I'm dropping the 5W20. The difference between 0W20 and 5W20 is negligible, I'll use the 0W20 in the Fords, most new Toyotas take 0W40 Mobil 1, and our used dept and customers just have to take it. I'm not stocking Toyota oil for them. In all honesty I wish they would just drop them all, in todays modern cars the 0W20 could service them all. There is so little difference. I worry about the older vehicles that come in here that are getting 5W30 that shouldn't be but I'm not adding back 10W30 or 10W40. We actually had an old Firechicken in here the other day, they filled it with 5W30 after resealing some leaks, customer failed to mention he has to run 20W50 to keep it from knocking. :x
