Customer A brings drops their 07 G5 off at 8:30 p.m. last night for the ignition switch recall...I'm working until 9 so I figure I'll have enough time to cut the keys and code the cylinder so it's ready for the AM...

While I am cutting the first key Customer B is dropping their 09 G5 off around 8:40 p.m. for the ignition switch recall; parks their vehicle next to Customer A's.

The first key I copied is finished so I go to the lot to make sure it works in the trunk and door. I try to insert it into Customer A's 07 G5 trunk and it doesnt go in so I thought I had the wrong vehicle; I step over to Customer B's 09 G5 and the key opens the trunk and the door.

I happen to look at the repair order while I am cutting the 2nd key for Customer A and the advisor walks by the counter; to bust his balls a bit I say "That vehicle is not Silver it's Dark Gray." He replies "No it's not it's Silver." We walk out the lot thinking he got keys mixed up; he didn't...The trunk and door lock cylinder's on Customer A's vehicle were frozen but their key worked in Customer B's door and trunk because the first 5 cuts were exactly the same!

Talk about a total mind^$&@()(#( for 8:45p.m. I had to leave everything on my desk and figure it out in the A.M.

Needless to say I WILL be playing the lottery today!

I hope you hit it big so you can retire and stop working till 9PM. Do you have to come in on Saturdays also? Good Luck!

It's myself and 2 countermen so we rotate Tues., Thurs. and Sat.
Depending on how the rotation goes at the most we work 2 Saturday's/month. Luckily it's only 8a.m. - 2p.m. though... :o

We've had a few duplicate codes too. Not to burst your bubble, but there are less than 10,000 available codes within the G-series, and with 2.6 million involved there will be many with the same code. A few years back we had a set of keys found here at the dealership. I figured out the code from the cuts and made a report to search our vehicle database; 5 vehicles had the same code!

The vehicles didn't have the same key code but the first 5 cuts were both the same so the one key worked for both vehicles. The odds of both vehicles being parked side by side and that happening is the same as one million people rolling trillion sided dice and landing on the same # 8-)
