Has anyone run into having only one broken key, do you put the full key covers on both keys? or put two kits on repair order?

Since the covers are sold in kit form and the inserts are sold separately I would recommend repairing both keys the with the covers.

We had this issue today as well. My decision was to repair BOTH keys with the covers, because:

1 - Bulletin labor operation states 2 keys

2 - Keys given back to customer will both match

3 - When adhesive fails and GM decides to replace keys, customer will be able to get 2 matching keys later as well

This still ranks as one of the worst, most difficult to explain recalls of all time.

But, what do you do when a customer brings in 3 keys to be repaired? We had one yesterday and only did 2 of them with the inserts and clipped the top of the key on the third to make it unable to be put on a ring.

This recall is as clear as mud. Have had a couple of customers come in and say that they only have the one key. We have just billed out 2 inserts and rings but there is no labor op to use for one key.

I'm billing out all 4 inserts on every RO and keeping any extras in here for any returning customer that shows up with their second key sometime down the road

Gm has given you yet another opportunity for new customers to enter the dealership. You should be trying to sell one customer pay key and repairing that key as well. We were also advised by our DMA if the customer has two metal headed keys to order new keys per the bulliten and repair as needed. (You would think if keys need to be ordered that they would come with the small hole).

This is the most retarded recall I've ever seen. We've tried the cover kit on a couple of metal headed keys and it made both too short to fit the ignition and neither car had a winged ignition. I guess we give them new keys now. It would have saved GM alot money by just saying if its not a GM key don't attempt a fix, just provide new keys. .4 is 30-40 bucks just to attempt a repair that failed. A key is 5 or 17 bucks depending if its chipped. Luckily if everything goes as planned we make 32 cents profit. That profit should be illegal, our techs could be doing something else that makes the business money. And the last rant. You can charge out 3.08 for net material on the cover kit procedure but when you follow their instructions to order the new nozzles that are a one time use they cost 5.28 each. Someone get me a burger king application.

If you have to replace keys related to a key, ignition cylinder recall, etc., either broken or aftermarket, just add them to the repair order and self authorize for "Part Ceiling Exceeded". We've done this a couple of times with no problem. Be sure and document on the repair order and add comments to the claim explaining why. Worst case scenario is the claim may have to be "H" routed.
