Ideas on staffing

Any one have an idea on how many employee's we should have. Sales around 200k a month. Gross 35%. We have 4 including myself. It just seems a little overwhelming at times. Walk in wholesale only and we have a busy service dept. and body shop.

We are averaging $185/mo. Gross is about 36%. I have myself andf 2 counter guys. I have to beg, borrow, or steal a runner to deliver what little local wholesale i have (less than 5% of my total sales). VERY busy shop, light retail, NO body shop. It's VERY overwelming, esp if someone is out sick or on vacation. I was the only one that could make it in for 2 day when we had our ice storm a few weeks ago.

I am at 160k at 37%. It's me from 7-5, and 2 counterpersons staggered 8-5 and 9-6. It can get rough when someone is vacationing. WE all have our roles and are able to function as a pretty well oiled machine. I know that the owner will not let me hire an extra. No use in getting frustrated. I know all the departments are staffed accordingly (shoestring and a prayer) So, I only do what I can do. I then goto the gym, home to have a beer and dinner, and then chase the wife around. (Neo mastiff puppy and Great Dane permitting)

You might be a little thin, how many hours/days do you need to cover?

Thanks guys, Some months we are doing 225 to 240k. We had 5 people for years up until a guy retired 3 years ago. I was surprised when I was told what we have will do. 7:30 to 5:30 daily, open sat. 7:30 to noon staffing 2 of us. I do stagger my staff on open and close times and I work most of our open hours with every other sat. off. Been in parts for 30 of my 38 years here. Just seems like things should be getting easier. lol. yes I do look forward to my nightly glass (bottle) of wine and spending a couple hrs with the wife.

You'll never get the help you want/need once you've proven you can get it done without it
