Taking a step back or possibly outside...

Taking a step back or possibly outside...

Postby Whiner » Tue Mar 17, 2015 1:27 am

A while back I accepted a 'promotion.' As with most things in a small store, one thing led to another and I find myself overwelmed with responsibilities that I never anticipated. I never wanted to be a GM and that is the way this job is going / perceived by others. Discussed with owners and have been told the job - my job - responsibilities have had to be modified due to changes in another department (office).

Have any of you accepted a 'promotion' only to realize it wasn't for you? Were you able to come to grips with the job or did you move back to managing one department at another store? There is no chance of returning to my old position - it has been filled by a very qualified / good person and I wouldn't do that to someone.

How difficult is it to change dealership brands? Long time General Motors guy considering all options to get out of a situation that doesn't suit him.

As the old saying goes "bit-off-more-than-I-can-chew"
Only this time the meal got bigger after I began eating.

I did it.

From multi franchise PM where I ended up cornered into basically FOM/Janitor/Daycare provider.

Had to change dealers and to a franchise I had not worked with for 20 years. Less money, less power, less hours, less stress etc.

Be prepared for the "overqualified" speech and current manager looking at you as a threat. Many places won't even call you back as they think you will just take next better job you find.
I was lucky to find a spot with old friend as PM so I am not a threat and can help him with anything he needs.

PM for 10 years, going back to the counter soon, at a dealer close to home. Very hard to leave people who have been good to me, but my sanity needs to resurface. Good luck in your search, and hopefully you find a suit that fits!

B964 You reminded me of a situation I was in once. I was a parts manager in the store while the service manager was having a rough time. After we left one particularly brutal management meeting he stopped, looked at me, and asked if I thought I could do his job better than he. Without hesitation I said yes. I didn't stop to think about what his feelings would've been with my answer.

He was very good at his job and I told him as much and my answer was not a reflection of his performance. My answer was based on confidence in my skills and capabilities. He never understood.

Whiner; Take the step. I can assure you it IS worth while. The almighty dollar is not the sole answer unless you are prepared to pay for it physically and yup, stress will take you there. Yes I still watch out for all of you but not the least bit amazed that NOTHING has changed at GM. Keep after them until it does!!!
