Synthetic Oil ?... Mobil 1 vs Dexos full Synthetic

A tech asked if the Now Fully Synthetic Dexos 5w-30 can replace the Mobil1 Synthetic oil of the same 5w-30 viscosity.

My answer to him was why would someone want the Dexos if they had a factory fill of Mobil1.

I emailed our GM rep back in October (former rep now seeing they change them like underwear) and he forwarded me a response from someone at GM or Exxon Mobil. My email was in regards to using the new full synthetic Dexos1 on Corvette, as that's about the only in production vehicle left that requires it. Here was their response:

Mobil 1 will continue to be necessary for Corvettes. While ACDelco dexos1 5w30 and Mobil 1 5w30 are both Full Synthetic, they are very different products. Thanks.

Long story short, if the factory calls for Mobil 1, use it (aka Corvette and older Cadillac products). If the customer wants Mobil 1 as an "upgrade" over the Dexos on all other cars, that is fine.

I thought the General gave us the okay to use Dexos on Corvettes and if the customer wants an upgrade than they can request it. The catalog shows Fluid recommendations: Dexos for all engines unless you are Racing

The 2014-2015 Chevrolet Complete Care Program for Corvettes was designed to take into account Mobil1 is the oil of choice for many Corvette owners.

As a reminder, dealers are required to use Mobil 1 when performing oil changes on ALL 2014-2016 Corvettes through the Chevrolet Complete Care Program.
