Disclosure of Non-GM Products

Disclosure of Non-GM Products

Postby drapp » Fri Aug 25, 2017 6:41 pm

There have been at least two clarification bulletins on this subject in the last day or two. I believe the latest is GCUS-14-829.

How is your dealership complying with these requirements? For all practical purposes this is nearly an impossible request - at least for us.

Who does it? Your office / cashier, how will they know when to use it - parts, has no access to repair order - service, they don't always know if a part is not GM. We don't always tell service if we substitute an insignificant small part such as a generic length of hose or a hose clamp, etc.

Just another way for GM to stay in control of everything.

We (PM, SM, GM) are currently reviewing how this will be handled in our store. We have 90 plus days to figure it out.

“The purpose of this new process is to ensure that customers understand the source of the products they purchase at a GM dealer and to promote retail transactional integrity. This process is not intended to be punitive. For the disclosure requirements to have any meaning, however, there must be a consequence for a dealer who ignores or refuses to make these very important disclosures. In order to give dealers adequate time to modify their forms, processes and procedures, GM will provide 90 days from September 1, 2017 to implement”.

Bearster18 you are exactly right. Just like RIM, Purchase Loyalty, Sales Loyalty, you can add this to the list of things to help GM get a bigger piece of the pie, while we get less. This will just aid in the loss of sales in the service department.

If we use a non GM part, they want our customers to sign a form stating the parts are not covered under the GM warranty, and they also may damage the vehicle, compromise its compliance with safety standards or void the GM warranty.

This will affect you especially on new cars/trucks if you install aftermarket wheel/tire pkgs, lifts, level kits, custom exhaust, window tinting, rustproofing etc.

Lifts and oversize tires can affect emissions, mileage, gov't crash testing, braking, rollover, etc. and it's against federal law to sell a new vehicle that has been modified to where it does NOT meet FMVSS anymore. Lift kit and aftermarket wheel companies DO NOT have to abide by FMVSS but WE DO! They all have disclaimers that it is up to the installer to determine that the modifications are legal.

Do any of you actually know how to be sure you're complying with FMVSS or state laws? For example here in NC headlights cannot be more than 42" off the ground and lifts cannot exceed 6". I'm sure there are federal standard for this as well.

CYA! Because GM will inspect/enforce these penalties for not labeling and disclosing the aftermarket stuff we do.

This is now an issue (#5937) on the GM Dealer Fixed Opps Advisory Board. It will be interesting to see the response.
