2019 Camaro V8 Warranty Oil Change

2019 Camaro V8 Warranty Oil Change

How is everyone coping with the $80 GM is paying for a warranty oil change on the new 2019 Camaro V8 with 10 quarts of 0W40 Mobil? Parts cost on oil and filter are $70 alone, not including paying an hourly tech.

I don't see a $80 reimbursement level for the 2019 Camaro. I see a $50 and a $75 reimbursement.

The $75 would be an expensive write-off. However, how many ZL1 or 1LE cars do you have out there?

Only the Camaro (RPO LS7, LT4 or LT1 with ZL1, Z28, 1LE package) requires Mobil 1 0W40 - if I read the chart correctly. All others take Dexos1 5W30.

2019 Camaro SS base engine is the LT1 and it takes 10 quarts of Mobil 1 0W40. The oil and filter together have a total dealer COST of $69.80...add in the labor and it doesn't leave much meat on the bone for anyone.

I understand what you are saying about there not being any profit here. Clearly the dealer is "eating" a lot of expense doing these free oil changes. We write off approx $20 on each one - more on some, less on others.

Camaro oil, like all things GM, is difficult to determine.

SI, Doc ID # 4998612 appears very clear. Use 19370233 OW-40.

However:

Camaro Owner's manual, SI, Doc ID # 4926189

Selecting the Right Engine Oil (6.2L (LT1) V8 Engine)

Selecting the right engine oil depends on both the proper oil specification and viscosity grade. See Recommended Fluids and Lubricants.

Specification
Use engine oils that meet the dexos2 specification. Engine oils that have been approved by GM as meeting the dexos2 specification are marked with the dexos2 approved logo.

Object ID: 2959961Click here for detailed picture of the image.
Caution: Failure to use the recommended engine oil or equivalent can result in engine damage not covered by the vehicle warranty.

Viscosity Grade
Use SAE 0W-40 viscosity grade engine oil.

When selecting an oil of the appropriate viscosity grade, it is recommended to select an oil of the correct specification. See “Specification” earlier in this section.

If 0W-40 dexos2 oil is not available, SAE 5W-30 dexos1 full synthetic engine oil may be used for street use.

NOTE THE LAST LINE OF THE ABOVE SELECTION.

Then there is SI DOC ID # 4578928 - which is the labor operation / payment selection document. This document is where I got the earlier quote. This document clearly spells out that LT1 without 1LE uses 5W30 Dexos 1.

So there you have it. Typical GM confusion. Depending on which document you look at and how you interpret that document is how you select the oil.

Based on the payment document - if a Camaro LT1 comes in our shop WITHOUT 1LE it will get 5W30 Dexos1 engine oil.

If a ZL1 comes in (LT4 engine) it gets the 0W40 with or without 1LE.

If a LT1 WITH 1LE comes in it gets 0W40.

To clear this up - in my mind - I wrote a DFOAB issue # 1022. The following is the response:

Dear Dealer,
Your issue has been resolved. This email serves as a receipt of resolution.
Issue Number: 1022
Issue Title: What Oil is Required in a '19 Camaro LT1 w/o 1LE
Issue Description:
See attachments for question explanation.
Resolution:
Dealers, and customers, should refer to the cap on the engine. In January 2018, all V8 engines (LT1 and LT4) were produced with 0W40 oil. As this was a mid-model year change for Camaro, please refer to what is on the engine oil cap. Additionally, the 2018 Owners manual states to use 0W40 but if not available – 5W30 Dexos 1 full synthetic oil may be used (which was used in production before we switched to 0W40).
Please log in to view issue details.
Thanks,
DFOAB System

So to answer the original question: GM pays $75 to change oil using 0W40 in a Camaro. We will continue to write these off as a shared expense. It sucks but we have zero say in these programs.
