how do you stock and store tires?

thank you for the input everyone.

I do have space for the 160 tires that we stock, I guess my main issue is with being able to find them. I do like the idea of setting up by mfg.for the group number, and then putting them in the racks by mfg. and size. I think this will help us save time finding the tires by being able to narrow which rack we need to be searching for them on.

This is a terrific question Torgy. In my parts departments we sell between 180-475 tires per month depending on the carline. The stores with the highest level of sales see the tires stored in the Service Drive on racks; ALL OF THEM. The rest of the stores have them racked as close to the tech counter as possible.

Every tire minimum stocking level is a full vehicle set.
The racks are organized by those sets in ascending order by size.
    We price match everyone.
Orders for stock are placed twice daily
Buy 3 Get 1 weekends can easily see 100-200 units installed

I like selling tires as it keeps my customers information off of others databases.

When I was stocking tires I separated by wheel diameter then width and made my bin number correspond.

Example:
T16235 for 235/60/16
T20255 for 255/50/20

Etc Etc.

I then had bin count sheets printed so you could quickly look at sheets to find a tire normally stocked. Before we did that counter people going to tire guide would end up ordering a tire of a make that we already had in stock of different make or model.

We stock about 100 tires here and sell about that many per month. Instead of keeping a list for the counter guys to know which sizes we have I just have part# changes set up so:

punch in: 275/55R20
R&R spits out: 19145377

if we have multiple options in a size, I put the additional part#s in the "remarks" section of the primary part# (in this case 19145377) in Part Maintenance (2101)

As far as storage goes, we have roll around racks for the service drive and the rest a stored in the parts warehouse.

A bit late to this party...
But, we have about 10 tire dollies (34" round with 4 wheels) We use these for all customer ordered tires and deliveries. As the tires come off the truck they are placed on them. Then rolled to the rack to be put up or pushed to the side with the customer info attached. This saves time and back breaking when the customer shows up. We just roll them out to the tire machine and pick up the empty dollies later.

At first I thought it may just be one more expense that wasn't really needed. But after using 3 of them for some months we bought 7 more. Now I say they were worth every penny.

We GAVE UP storing tires. We are Chev only, and I keep one set of 265/65r18 Fortitude on hand. That's IT. Too big of a hassle otherwise, and we don't make any money on tires to start with.

an easy trick my old boss showed me was in cdk function SDL type in say 2354517 and enter whatever tires you stock in that size to the list and anytime typing in 2354517 in an invoice or ro it will bring up a list, which is what we do makes it easy, as for stocking we use upstairs and service drive no particular order but i plan to find whats highest selling to be downstairs for obvious reasons. also had started using AOR for two places watching costs for both to make each make sense to use for said tire.
