fees for cutting keys

Since this Covid-19 lock down, I have had more people lose their keys than ever before. The belligerent attitudes I have received for asking for the minimum amount of paperwork, has made me a dictator. My fees went up on everything. I had a man, lose the key that I just cut a month ago and while I had his paperwork, his attitude was unbelievable!

We have seen the same. I have also seen a longer wait for ordered keys (1-2 weeks). I have came VERY close to telling a customer or two to go somewhere else.

I was just reading through this thread to see what everyone is charging to cut keys and or obtaining key codes. I am currently charging 40.00 to obtain a key code and cut a key and I am considering raising my fee
just because of all the hassle involved with it along with the cost of replacing the cutting wheel and bits when they get worn out. We have the IIco Futura Pro key machine and it works like a champ. It just seems like more and more people are losing their keys or needing duplicate keys for one reason or another and I rarely have anyone squawk about the fee. I tracked the number of keys we cut for the past 2 months and we are averaging cutting 3 keys per day so I am thinking that I could pickup some additional GP by cutting all of these keys. My thought is to go to 55.00 to cut a key by code which is how we do most of ours, we rarely copy or trace cut a key.

Please let me know what you are all charging for cutting keys and pulling keys codes these days. Thank you.

Southwest Michigan is where we are located. I charge $35 to look up a code. I also charge that fee if someone brings their own key. I have seen an increase in people that buy from Ebay, Amazon, etc., and bring them here and expect the service to cut for free. I have done this for so long that I have the riot act from GM memorized and read through it with each customer. I also explain that keys are not refundable. Unfortunately, these requests are always time consuming and my time is worth money. Not to mention the costs of key machines. I had to get on my knees and beg for a laser machine for the high security keys. I got tired of explaining how long it took to get a key precut from GM. Also, the sales staff here got burned a few times when they lost all the keys to a stock unit. I have considered upping this fee numerous times, and after reading this it makes sense!

We charge $75 for any code access from GM, no charge on the actual cutting of the key as long as the customer buys the blank from us. We do NOT cut outside keys brought into dealership. ...or program fobs from outside.

$60.00 for a laser cut key (sidewinder), that matches what the local locksmith charges. Normal side cut key is $10.00 Had a few customers bitch while looking at their phone, surfing the internet. Asked them how much they pay for their phone each month. That usually shuts them up.
