Hello all:
Newbie to GM, about 3 months now.
Worked in Ford parts a long time and now find my self at a small GM dealer.
I am basically a one-man show in parts and trying to get a grasp of the GM parts processes.
The parts department is a huge dumpster fire but I am slowly getting it in order and trying to get the department profitbable and clean up the inventory.
Could ya'll give me the basics of RIM?
I know a lot of dealers hate it but it is what it is.
I am at a small dealer and our parts sales are 98% shop business at the dealership( which is not much).
The DMS system is DealerTrack.
Thanks in advance.
RIMs 101, help
Re: RIMs 101, help
To be honest your best bet is to call the 800 rim line they can walk you through the basics once you know the basics you can figure out how to make it work for you.

There is also a course in the Center of Learning that is pretty good for newbies.
Re: RIMs 101, help
You have to each month go under "obsolescence protection query" and approve the RIM return or you will lose the ability to return those parts. Ours generates around the 23rd of the month but I think other dealers get returns generated at different times during the month.
Re: RIMs 101, help
another question do you need to have return reserve money to send back a rim return

RIM will automatically generate a RIM return. You do however need reserve money to send anything back that isn't RIM protected.

Re: RIMs 101, help
Been reading on GMs website about RIMs and how great it is and how fill-rates and CSI scores are going to improve.
Furthermore, they state GM 'knows' what we need to stock and how to do it efficiently. LOL
To me it seems like a big scam by GM to off-load parts onto the dealers and make their sales figures look great.
Why do I need to stock a distributor cap and rotor that we sold 6 months ago?
Why do we need to stock a $500 steering column for a 10 year vehicle that there has only been one sale on in they last 5 years?
The dealership I am at was/is a huge dumpster fire. The parts department was/is in shambles and was neglected for years. I am slowly improving it week by week.
As of right now, half of our inventory is 'dead' money sitting on the shelf with no way of sending it back to GM. Yep, no RIMs returns.
The inventory is bloated and we need a third, if that, of the current dollar value that is presently here.
OK, I am ranting here.
Is there a list that we must stock? Is there different stocking levels for smaller dealers?
Too many questions

Rim is a joke. But you must have at least 85% to qualify for PASE. The rim stock is protected, meaning if it does not sale in 15 months it can be sent back with no penalty. You also have a say in what you keep. I make sure that I keep low priced stuff and have to had a sale 3 times in the year. If not then sorry charlie, it does not come in. It one thing if it a small priced item, a steering wheel would not make it if I had not sold in more than once and in more than one month.

You are where I was 2 years ago. Best thing you can do is call the RIM help line, and schedule a 1 hour walkthrough with Adam. I can PM you his direct line if need be.parts-slinger wrote:Been reading on GMs website about RIMs and how great it is and how fill-rates and CSI scores are going to improve.

There are some aspects of how RIM works that I like. My only wish is that it worked a little faster. Two days waiting for stock parts is a little excessive in my mind.
You do not need return reserve to send back RIM returns. You DO need to be RIM compliant to send back RIM returns. The return reserve is money that you earn by buying GM parts from GM.
If you have any questions, do not be afraid to ask!
