We are having a small discussion here about which department has jurisdiction over the cashiers office, Service or Accounting. Our accounting office seems to want nothing to do with it. I have always assumed that the accounting office should have control. Just a quick service or accounting response would be great.

Hello everyone,

This is my first reply to the service side of dealersedge.com. I am a parts regular.
Accounting is in charge of the cashier in our dealership. In another local dealership I visited recently, the parts department is in charge of the register. SHHHH, don't tell anyone that!

Since money is involved, it shoud be accounting. Also, it depends on location of the cashiers as well. In all the places I have worked, the office manager and service management work together.

The cashier has two functions. One is dealing with customers and the other is dealing with accounting. The customer function is much more important then the relatively small amount of cash she handles. I think that service should select the best candidate and that accounting then has veto power.

I have seen a new trend that really makes a lot of sense. It is a different idea and I am going to start a new thread with this idea.

The primary function of the cashier is dealing with the customer. If you want an example of lousy customer relations, check any dealership's Accounts Receivable clerk. If this is the type of relationship you would like to establish with your service customers, then, by all means, put the office in control of the cashier. The obvious answer is: of course the cashier must answer to the Service Manager.

I agree the cashiering is an office function to be supervised by the account office. Dealing with customers and improving CSI should be of concern to everyone in the dealership, including accounting. I also agree that there needs to be input and supervision from the service manager. There are also other considerations. Is the cashier a service cashier? Does the cashier have other duties like picking up excess phone traffic, data input for the accounting office, service filing, office filing? Are vehicle deposits received through the cashier? Where is the cashier located, in service, in the accounting office?

Just because there is money involved, it shouldn't be assumed that it is accountings responsibility. Who is the money for? Service? Then service employees are responsible. We should all be able to count and be trustworthy. Accountings job is to make sure it gets to the proper accounts and bank. Just my 2 cents (and their canadian so there not even worth a cent US!)
