Little did I know that when I posted this seemingly controversial subject that such a healthy discussion would ensue. Thank you all for your enthusiastic responses. As a result we have indeed changed the means in which our Service Advisors are paid. A healthy exchange of ideas resulted, and the determination was made that each department should take care of their own payroll expenses. Certainly the Service & Parts departments must coexist peacefully. The Parts employees are not paid from labor sales or productivity even though their performance can and does affect the daily outcome. It was decided that the line had to be drawn somewhere. Departments take care of their own people, but we still need to assemble as teams in order to take care of the customers who, when the day is done, are the people who are truly making the payroll happen.
