New Parts Manager

Hello all. I'm a new Parts Manager and need to carry out interviews to find a new Parts Advisor. Can any of you experienced guys give me any tips on interviewing a candidate?

Be up front with the person and tell them what you will expect from them. It is difficult to hire a person, at least in our area, that has good work ethics. A lot of people feel entitled to the pay without having to put forth the effort. Good luck!!!!

I have had better luck promoting with in, such as a driver or a sales person, the aftermarket world in most cases are the worse they don't understand the dealership life
and the concept that you can't just order a part and return it without it costing the parts dept.

I found it best to find the most logical, process driven person with at least some experience around automotive parts or service, preferably from in house and a tech or writer who wants a new path. Sales staff... eh, they tend to wing too much stuff and not follow procedures. Porters and details can work out too, as long as they have those traits and can retain information (learn quickly.)

I had decent luck with promoting from within. I also found a perfect gem by spreading the word to my friends in the aftermarket stores, as well as my ADI/Delco distributor.

If you have a Human Resources Manager discuss this with them. They can give you advice on both what to ask as well as what not to ask which is just as important. If your company does not have someone in this role perhaps a seasoned manager will do.
